Pather Panchali a film by Satyajit Ray will be screened, following
the Sidharth Maitra Memorial lecture by Partha Mitter and Sharmila
Tagore. Pather Panchali, made in 1955, was the very first film of acclaimed
Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray's career, and portrays the everyday
life and hardships of an impoverished family in a rural Bengal village.
This year, Pather Panchali was selected to headline the Cannes Classics
portion of the Cannes Film Festival, to mark the fiftieth anniversary

a.m.) by Ali Kazimi is a stunning recollection of the 1914 voyage
of 376 Indians aboard the Komagata Maru, the first ship bearing migrants
to be turned away from Canadian shores. Silent Waters (at 1:30 p.m.)
by Sabiha Sumar, is an intensely moving and cinematically rich feature
film about a country and its people struggling with a troubled past
and an uncertain future set against the backdrop of 1979 Pakistan.
City of Photos (at 4 p.m.) by Nishtha Jain, documents and explores
the little known neighborhood photo studios in Indian cities, discovering
entire imaginary worlds in the smallest of spaces. No More Tears,
Sister: An Anatomy of Hope and Betrayal (at 5 p.m.) by Helene Klowdawsky
depicts the passion and courage of renowned human rights activist
Rajani Thiranagama and her dangerous pursuit of justice in Sri Lanka
