Listening to Shadows

Original Language:
ENGLISH

Direction:
Koushik Sarkar

1998. 26min.
Gujarat/India.

Listening to Shadows is an exploration of the worlds of the sighted and the blind, a dialogue between the filmmaker and a visually impaired friend.... an investigation into the nature of image and sound. The "protagonist" talks of growing up blind in India, of wanting to be a lecturer in the face of discouragement from teachers. He shares his thoughts on theatre, death, dreams, friendship, and tells us to put away our pity because he has no desire for sight: "What you have never known you cannot miss," he says and, quoting Alexander Pope, "Whatever is, is right."

About the Director ...

Koushik Sarkar is a student at the National Institute of Design in India, in the specialisation of Film and Video Communication, and is working on his diploma project, a CD-ROM on a well-known painter. Looks from the Other Side, a video documentary on faith healing, is an earlier project done a NID.
